Dell releases information about OpenManage and new printing management solution

DellDell recently announced Version 2 of its OpenManage Printer Manager (Dell OMPMv2). This tool will help IT departments manage all their printers from one central location. The tool is web-based, so no client software is needed.

The Dell OMPMv2 enables centralized control of printers from multiple vendors. The printers can be placed into groups, so that each group can be managed as a unit, instead of having to manage each printer individually. The printer discovery feature allows for automatic discovery of printers on the network, saving time and data entry requirements.

Printer downtime can be kept to a minimum by utilizing the real-time monitoring and alert features of the tool. Security features include password protection, authentication of users, and audit logs. Asset, status, and usage reports are provided as defaults, and custom reports can be configured as well.

Printers can be configured individually or as a group. Once a group’s configuration is defined, printers can be added automatically. Default groups are provided in the software.
Printer toner and paper tray status can be monitored remotely, saving considerable time and effort normally used to check on each printer’s supplies individually. Any issues that come up with a printer will automatically show up on the centralized console.

A 30-day trial version of the tool is available for free on the Dell website.

The OpenManage Printer Manager is part of the Dell OpenManage suite of software products for managing IT networks and systems. Other components include the OpenManage Server Administrator, Content Manager and OpenManage Network Manager. Dell stresses the open, integrated nature of these management tools, which manage components from multiple vendors using open standards. Thus one suite of management tools can replace a complex system of proprietary tools for each separate vendor.

Dell has also established a partnership with Cortado, Nuance and Perceptive Software to provide document workflow, cloud printing, document management and content management.
